Going for Gold

The UCI Anteater Recreation Center was a design-build project which consisted of a 20,000-sf addition to the existing recreational center on UCI’s campus. This new addition includes a 10,000-sf weight room/fitness center, a 6,700-sf multipurpose activity room, a 1,000-sf wellness center with physical therapy room & fitness counseling offices, as well as a 750 sf maintenance shop for weights & fitness equipment.

This project was originally LEED certified, and the UCI representatives elected to add “University Alternate No. 3” to increase the certification to Silver. Soltek’s design team along with the subcontractors pushed and trumped the required Silver certification and achieved a LEED Gold Certification!

This nationally recognized certification distinguishes Soltek’s UCI Anteater project as meeting the highest green building and performance measures and symbolizes that the project was environmentally responsible.

Some LEED components of the project included:

• Sustainable Sites:

Installed an AEP Cool Red Standing Seam roof to match roof

• Water Efficiency:

Installed ultra low-flow urinals, low-flow water closets, and low-flow aerators to cut 30% of water use.

Plant selection and irrigation system designed to reduce water consumption by 50% or greater.

• Energy an Atmosphere:

Optimized Energy performance to beat title 24 Calculations by 28%.

Purchased Green Power for 2 years.

• Materials and Resources:

Achieved 75% of waste diversion and recycled materials.

Meet max allowable points for Recycled Content & Regional Materials.

• Indoor Environmental Quality:

Used low emitting adhesives, sealants, paint & carpet.

Conducted a Indoor Air Quality test that was monitored throughout the project.

• Innovation & Design Process:

Installed Low-flow water closets and urinals, and low-flow aerators with automatic control valves.
