December 2006 marked the demolition and start of the New Sherman Elementary School project.

This will be the fourth school built on the site. The first school was built in 1870 and expanded in 1889. These buildings stood until a new school was built in 1977.

The school which is located in the heart of San Diego on land donated by Matthew Sherman an Army Captain who was stationed in San Diego during the Civil War. The bell was donated in 1900 and was in the tower of the former Sherman School which will now be placed in the tower of the administration building of the new school.

The project involves 58,659-sf of new buildings on a six acre site. The project is slated for 18 months with a September 2008 school opening.

The project is led by Brandon Richie, Project Manager, Rick Austin, Superintendent, and Karla Simon, Project Coordinator.
