BOQ Monterey - Naval Postgraduate School
The $31 million renovation consisted of two large, historically significant structures connected to the former Del Monte Hotel, now known as Hermann Hall, at the Naval Postgraduate School Monterey. The buildings consist of bachelor officers quarters for 140 students and renovation of all building facilities. The two structures were built in 1888 and historically significant and the Navy deemed these buildings eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.
The wings that we renovated were added in 1880-1881 to expand the hotel facility. The main building constructed of redwood from the local forests burned to the ground around 1882 or 1883 and was rebuilt and opened in 1884-1885. The hotel was very successful but did sustain damage in the 1906 earthquake and refurbished shortly afterward. The railroad sold the site and hotel to the Del Monte family around the turn of the century who were well known in the area for their produce and canning business. The main building again was burned to the ground around 1910's and was rebuilt but out of concrete which was a new construction material at the time. The interior beams, columns and ornamental finishes were also made of concrete and finished to look like wood and plaster which still exist today.
In the 1930's the Navy acquired the site as a base and after WWII converted it to the Naval Postgraduate School which is in operation today. When Soltek was awarded the contract for this project the east and west wings were in need of repair and an expensive renovation took place adding concrete foundations to bring the buildings into compliance with the currant seismic requirements for California, renovation of the building exteriors, and period correct renovation of the interior spaces except for the rooms which were brought up to standards of a modern hotel with all the conveniences we expect today. As part of the site work the existing parking lot and lawn areas were removed and landscaped courtyards added to finish the site around the two wings.
Congratulations to the entire Soltek team and additional thanks to Dave Carlin, MCO; Jim Riley & Mark Reed, PM’s; Matt Pentin, Superintendent; John Bayardo & Hans DeRoos, QC’s; Scott Martin & Emery Russell, Assistant Superintendents; Kathy Deane, Amy Reed, & Courtney Froemming, Administrative Assistants.
