Juan Lagunas Soria Elementary School

As a Charter School the campus provides special education opportunities for minority and disadvantaged students designed to main stream the instructional process. The Oxnard School District dedicated the school to the family of Juan Lagunas Soria which was attended by state and local school officials, congressmen, the mayor of Oxnard and other dignitaries.

The $32.5 million dollar contract allowed for a 88,000-sf campus comprising of six buildings including the administration building, a multi-purpose building for assemblies and sports activities, a full commercial kitchen, a library with computer work stations, a building designated for new kindergarten students and after school programs, and two multi-story classroom buildings for grades one through six.

Outdoor facilities include multi-purpose amphitheatres with stages, work stations adjacent to the classrooms, and exterior courtyard with seating for classroom instruction. In addition, there is a two acre sports field with baseball and softball diamonds, basketball and volleyball facilities and two play structures with rubber surfaces.

The project includes energy efficient design features such as the use of skylights in all buildings and classrooms which are integrated with the lighting systems to manage energy consumption, high efficient heating and ventilation equipment and low maintenance landscaping. To assist in air quality the building design includes a passive vapor barrier system under the mat foundations to minimize any off gassing, operable transom windows and low VOC paint.

Job well done! The project team included: Project Manager - William Griswold, Superintendent - Tim Wendorff, Field Foreman - Bruno Lehoux, Project Engineer - Ty Brewer, Assistant Project Engineer - Blanca Sanchez, and Administrative Assistant - Rosie Rodriguez.
