New addition to the existing Science Building.

This project consisted of taking an existing 55,000 sf building built in the 1960's that had been gutted and abated, and completely remodel the interior for use as a state of the art science classroom with complete laboratories.  In addition to the remodel there is a two-story addition that is designed to match the existing 47 year old structure that is used for faculty offices, classrooms and cadaver storage.  Very little site work is involved as the structure is situated in the middle of the existing campus.

Value Engineering:  Due to unforeseen conditions the existing substrate was not suitable for the new roofing.  Rather than proceeding with change order work to strip the substrate, it was suggested to slurry the entire building and create flow with the light weight slurry.  This in turn removed the need for tapered insulation and ultimately resulted in a credit for the College to offset other costs related to the unforeseen conditions encountered.

Sustainable Design Features:  Due to extreme soil conditions in the area the entire structure has been designed with the entire building slab to be elevated between 2' and 7' off the ground.  Massive spread footings were installed to stabilize the foundation and resist any conceivable movement in the building.
