P-167 Bachelor’s Enlisted Quarters (BEQ), MCLB, Barstow, CA
The new 14,387 S.F. BEQ is comprised of six separate buildings that share a common roof and are arranged to create a courtyard in the center. The BEQ contains 28 sleeping units with a central common building that houses the duty bunk/office, laundry, mechanical, electrical, communications, a multi-purpose room, game room, a kitchen, restrooms, and WiFi lounge. The landscaping was designed to be economical and environmentally friendly by utilizing native drought tolerant plants and is furnished with two lit Canopies, BBQs, sidewalks, decomposed granite, and an exercise area. Photovoltaic panels, with a total output of 75.5kW, were installed on the roof tops of all the new buildings as well the new carport.
LEED certification of Platinum was based on the use of several techniques, including the use of a highly efficient HVAC system that includes an air cooled chiller, fire-tube boilers, a reverse-return five pipe system with fan coil units, an air handling unit with a heat recovery wheel for make-up air and exhaust, pressure switches that turn off fan coils when windows are open, and refrigerants that contain no CFCs or HCFCs. Combined with the photovoltaic system the building achieves an overall energy performance 77% greater than the Title 24 baseline. These, as well as additional features, provided the client with a facility that will conserve energy and reserve resources for generations to come.
