The Roosevelt International Middle School Whole Site Modernization project is closing out this week, marking the successful completion of a fast-moving and meaningful campus transformation that started with a groundbreaking ceremony in April 2024.
Located next to the San Diego Zoo, Roosevelt International Middle School holds a special place in San Diego’s history as one of the city’s first junior high schools. The Phase I modernization work brought long-awaited improvements to the historic campus, including a new single-story, 10,000-square-foot administration and classroom building, the conversion of the existing administration building into six classrooms, modernization of the boys’ and girls’ restrooms, and significant exterior and site improvements.

The project also included accessibility upgrades, perimeter fencing, landscape and irrigation improvements, new parking areas, photovoltaic carports, student drop-off and pick-up improvements, and right-of-way work along Zoo Drive to support safer campus circulation.
A Successful Finish Built on Teamwork
From the early underground utility work and concrete foundations to the summer construction push, administration building progress, campus improvements, and final closeout, the Soltek team and trade partners worked together in carrying the project forward with focus, flexibility, and a strong commitment to the campus community.
For Foreman Jim Stewart, the project’s success came down to the people.
“We had a good time and a good crew. You got to have a bit of fun with all the seriousness and all the work you’re doing, which we did.”
That balance of hard work, humor, and camaraderie helped shape the tone of the project from start to finish.
