Located at the Barstow Marine Logistics Base, the new 14,387 sq. ft. Bachelor Enlisted Quarters includes six separate buildings under a common roof in an arrangement creating a center courtyard. The BEQ has 28 sleeping units and a central Commons Building that houses the duty bunk and office, laundry, mechanical, electrical, communications, a multi-purpose room, game room, a kitchen, restrooms, and WiFi lounge. The facility includes economical and environmentally friendly landscaping which utilizes native drought tolerant plants, and such exterior amenities as two lighted shade canopies, barbecues, meandering colored concrete sidewalks, decomposed granite pathways, and an exercise area. To reduce electrical energy consumption, photovoltaic panels with a 75.5kilo-watt output were installed on the roof tops of all the new buildings as well the new carport.
The facility has achieved LEED Platinum certification, which is based on the implementation of such design features as a highly efficient HVAC system that includes an air cooled chiller, fire-tube boilers, a reverse-return five pipe system with fan coil units, an air handling unit with a heat recovery wheel for make-up air and exhaust, pressure switches that turn off fan coils when windows are open, and refrigerants that contained no CFCs or HCFCs. Combined with the photovoltaic system the building achieves an overall energy performance 77% greater than the Title 24 baseline.
Awards: The facility has received LEED Platinum certification by the U.S. Green Building Council and the American Public Works Association, MCLB Barstow ROICC Office Safety through Awards and Recognition (STAR) award, for outstanding safety awareness.
