The 19,365 sq. ft. Dining Commons Seismic Corrections and Renovations project (also known as the De La Guerra Dining Commons) provided structural upgrades to UCSB’s busiest student cafeteria. The construction effort included new masonry walls, concrete foundation work, new metal framing, structural steel, and structural one-hour rated curtain wall system. New mechanical systems were installed including new stainless ductwork, and all plumbing systems were replaced.
The extensive kitchen renovation included loading dock improvements, new walk-in freezer and refrigeration units, additional kitchen storage, dishwasher room, serving prep area, buffet style serving lines, stainless steel counters, sliding trays, glass sneeze guards, free-standing refrigerators, stainless steel ranges, ovens, and kitchen hoods with fire suppression system. The renovations were sufficient to increase the serving capacity of the facility to three meals daily for 1,400 students. Durable finishes were also installed to handle the facility’s heavy use, including porcelain tile floor finishes, stained concrete and epoxy floor coatings, solid surface countertops, and stainless steel wall panels. Seating arrangements were reconfigured to meet increased capacity demands, and included new tables, booths and banquettes throughout.
